Making an Example

Still trying to weasel out of this? Really?

I barked a harsh, bitter laugh. “Save your excuses. Every last one of you is as good as dead. Nothing you say will change that.”

Their faces twisted—fear, then a dark, menacing malice flared in their eyes.

“James, don’t push me too far!” Ahmir roared, his fake, meek demeanor shattering like glass. What was left was a sniveling, resentful beast, his jaw clenched so tight his teeth ground.

“Too far?” I said coldly, lifting my rifle until the barrel glinted under the jungle sun. “I pulled you from those natives when they were seconds away from cutting you down where you stood. You’d be rotting in the mud right now if it weren’t for me. And this is how you repay me? Stabbing me in the back after three lousy days?”

“Saved me? Spare the hero act!” Ahmir spat, his voice cracking with envy. “You didn’t care about me—you just wanted the women here. We’re both outsiders. Why do you get to call the shots? Why do you get the prettiest ones, hanging off your arm like trophies? I’m sick of being your doormat!”

I almost laughed again, this time with pure disgust. Motives be damned—the fact that I’d saved his life was unarguable. Why did I lead here? Because I was the one who knew how to survive in this hellhole. Why did the women choose me? Because I didn’t treat them like property, like Scarface did. Scumbags like Ahmir were everywhere back in the States—weak, bitter losers who resented anyone who had more grit than them.

I didn’t waste another word. I lifted my rifle and slammed the stock toward his skull, hard.

But to my shock, he dodged. Fast. Too fast.

His hand flashed, and a glinting dagger appeared out of nowhere—he lunged, the blade aimed straight for my chest, movements sharp and brutal, nothing like the clumsy act he’d put on for weeks.

Oh, I got it now. That scrawny, weak act? Total bullshit. He’d been pretending this whole time—dragging his feet in the jungle, complaining about sore muscles, acting like he couldn’t lift a rock. All to make me let my guard down, so he could strike when I least expected it.

Too bad for him, I’d been training with Sakura for months. She was faster than a snake, and we’d drilled sudden attacks until my reactions were instinct. Did he really think he could outmaneuver me?

As the dagger sliced toward my chest, I planted my foot and kicked hard, right into the side of his knee.

A sharp crack echoed through the trees. Ahmir screamed, crumpling to the ground, the dagger clattering away. The blade had grazed my shirt, but that was it.

I didn’t let up. Before he could even gasp, I drove my elbow into the side of his neck. His eyes rolled back, and he went limp, unconscious.

Of the three native women with him, one was our informant—she stood still, hands up, staying out of the fray. The other two, Hula and Kaila, lunged at me and Lala.
